ICAR-VPKAS has organized one day online training program on “Tuta absoluta in tomato: symptoms, identification and management strategies” on July 09, 2020. More than 35 officials from State Horticulture Departments, Uttarakhand, Himanchal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Officers from different KVKs have joined the program. The program was inaugurated by Dr. Lakshmi Kant, Director ICAR-VPKAS. He highlighted the importance of Tuta absoluta in tomato crop especially in polyhouses. He told that since 2018, this pest has gained the status of key pest to tomato production in Uttarakhand hills and if unmanaged the pest has ability to cause severe yield loss at the field level. By managing this pest using different methodologies, we will be able to enhance our production and productivity. Dr. N.K. Hedau, Principal Scientist, Vegetable Science delivered a lecture on “Tomato production scenario in NW Himalayas under protected cultivation”. He gave an overview of the tomato crops, its production status and biotic stresses of the crop. Dr. ARNS Subbanna, Scientist, Agril. Entomology emphasized the importance of tomato pin worm and delivered a lecture on “Tuta absoluta in tomato: symptoms and identification”. Mr. Amit U. Paschapur, Scientist (Agri. Entomology) has given his presentation on “Management strategies for Tuta absoluta” with emphasis on package of Integrated Pest Management. The program was concluded with vote of thanks to all the dignitaries and participants by Dr. K.K. Mishra, Head, CPS.
