A field day of recently notified Garden pea varieties viz., "VL Sabji Matar 13 (Early duration variety)" and "VL Sabji Matar 15 (Medium duration variety)" was organized on 10.03.2021 at Narrottampur village, Bail-Parao, Nainital. The varietal demonstration cum seed production of both these varieties is being carried out in around 4.00 acres during the ongoing season by the ICAR-VPKAS, Almora. The field day's objective was to showcase the potential and create awareness about these varieties among farmers and officials of line departments. Mr R.S. Verma (State Seed Certification, Uttarakhand), Dr Chanchal Shah (National Seed Corporation, Uttarakhand), representatives of the State Horticulture Department and around 40 farmers from Bail-Parao and adjoining areas attended the field day programme. One day, On-farm training on Garden pea seed production was also organized at the same place in which 12 tribal farmers (Nakuliya & Jhankat) have participated.
Programme was graced by Dr Lakshmi Kant, Director, ICAR-VPKAS, Almora, who emphasized the importance of quality seed and its availability among the farmers. Dr. N. K. Hedau, Pr. Scientist, provided detailed technical know-how of the varieties and responded to the farmers' queries. Mr. Rajender Singh, the farmer, directly associated with the seed production of both varieties, expressed his satisfaction over the varieties' performance and shared his experience about the varieties with farmers during the programme. Farmers appreciated the performance of the variety, particularly in view of its high pod yield and more grains/pods (10 grains), which had a very encouraging impact among farmers and many farmers showed their willingness to take up the seed production of these varieties during next year. At the end of the program, the vote of thanks was presented by Dr. R K Khulbe, Principal Scientist, ICAR-VPKAS, Almora.
