World water day was celebrated on March 22, 2021 at ICAR-VPKAS, Almora focussing the theme of “Valuing water” and highlighting the importance of available fresh water. Dr Lakshmi Kant, Director, ICAR-VPKAS, Almora inaugurated the programme and delivered a lecture on role of Institute on water management in hills agriculture. He highlighted the importance of watershed management for increasing farmer’s income and highlighted the great role which the Institute has to play in achieving it. Dr. S.C. Pandey, Principal Scientist delivered a presentation on Rationale of World water Day and indicated the water management technologies developed by Institute. Dr. J.K. Bisht, Head, Crop Production Division, talked on importance of water management in hills and effort of the Institute in improving the status of farmers in Bhagartola village of Almora District.
The programme was carried out by organising a interaction meeting with farmers and students and a lecture was delivered on “Efficient water management techniques for enhancing water productivity of crops” by Dr. Jitendra Kumar. To commemorate the occasion drawing, extempore and quiz competition was also organised for the class IX students. More than 150 participants including farmers, scientists, subject matter specialist/ extension officials and 35 students of Government Inter College, Hawalbagh, Almora were participated. 11 Nos of State officers/SMS from North eastern region were attended the programme also. Earlier, Dr Kushagra Joshi, Scientist welcomed all the participants. The programme was ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Nirmal Hedau, Principal Scientist, Crop Improvement Division, ICAR-VPKAS, Almora. The programme was coordinated by Dr. S.C. Pandey and Dr. Jitendra Kumar.
